Iranians and their supporters gathered hundreds strong on Dam Square in Amsterdam, on Sunday 16th October 2022, in support of Iranians protesting on the streets of Iran. Security forces cracked down on protesters after the arrest and sudden deaths of 22-year-old Mahsa Amin and 16-year-old Nika Shakarami, a few weeks short of her 17th birthday, and arrested while attending a protest demo for Mahsa Amini. Amin, was arrested by morality police for the improper wearing of her hijab -headscarf. Police clime that she suffered a cardiac arrest while being questioned; her injures indicated otherwise. She later died in police custody. Human rights groups in Iran say at least over 200 protesters have been killed. The morality police are part of the national police force and established in 2005 to uphold the Islamic moral code on dress. It is estimated that 7,000 male and female officers have the power to issue fines, warnings and to arrest.
