“This is Not a Drill”. Extinction Rebellion’ staged a peaceful ‘Die-In’ at the University of Leiden in The Hague

University of Leiden in The Hague. Anna van Buerenplein, The Netherlands. Monday 2nd March, 2020. Dad weather did not dampen the sprit nor the message this afternoon of ‘Extinction Rebellion, The Hague and Extinction Rebellion NL’ as students took a temporary break from their lectures and showed solidarity. On the first Monday of each month in The Netherlands -sirens are tested as a warning of an imminent disaster. Extinction Rebellion’ use this opportunity to simulate a real-life crisis. Around 170 participated in all, and those that braved the weather took part in a symbolic ‘Die-In’ at twelve-noon. The staged act is to emphasize that a climate crisis is imminent and not just a drill, but, a real-life disaster that will affect both the climate and the Earth’s fragile eco-system. (ER) has three objectives that they expect the University to adhere to. 1: To declare a climate emergency and to be honest about the scientific consensus regarding the devastating effects of human actions on life. 2: To execute its own sustainability goals by 2025 and 3: To redefine the learning goals in such a way that all students are aware of the relevance of the climate crisis for their respective fields. © Charles M Vella/Alamy Live News
