The unauthorized demonstration relating to (Covid-19) attracted

Museumplein, Amsterdam. Sunday 17th January 2021. More of a battle than a demonstration. 115 people were arrested for failure to obey police orders, and seven for violent behaviour. The unauthorized demonstration relating to (Covid-19) attracted about 2000 people, repeated warnings by the police to leave Museumplein were ignored. According to the municipality, 200 to 250 people were "clearly confrontational" hailing firework’s and cobblestone from neighbouring streets, some demonstrations carried flares and weapons. The police retaliated with two water-cannon, canine units, baton chargers, both mounted and unmounted. The unrest then drifted to the surrounding area. The demonstration was initially planned for Westerpark, and a maximum 500 protesters. The action group 'Nederland in resistance' had their event cancelled due to (Covid-19) restrictions. The organizer filed a lawsuit against the decision of the municipality. © Charles M Vella/SOPA Images/Alamy Live News
