H.R.H. Princess Beatrix opened the New UNESCO World Heritage site at Kinderdijk.
Kinderdijk, The Netherlands. Saturday, 7 September 2019. Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands, this evening opened the new UNESCO World Heritage site at Kinderdijk. Kinderdijk is the site of the world’s largest windmill complex. During her visit H.R.H. spoke to volunteers from the World Heritage Kinderdijk Foundation. Her Majesty also attended the Visitors Centre that offers a panoramic view of the (19) mills. This evening marks the end of a 22 year wait to gain World Heritage recognition – a process that was initiated in 1997. The mills have kept the region of Alblasserwaard dry for centuries, although modern day pumping stations have now taken over this function. This year, the Kinderdijk mill complex was placed on the Worlds Heritage list. © Charles M. Vella
